Product and Toy Design
As a product designer, I am influenced by stories, moments in life, and the intricate 3D forms of nature. I work with the idea of capturing memories within treasurable products and heartfelt gifts, with a particular interest in designing and building mechanical toys.
‘Pond’
2023
Personal Project
Mechanical laser cut plywood and acrylic pond with dancing creatures and pond plant details.
‘Wrinkles’ Sensory Flipbook Box
2023
Personal Project
Expanding on my animation short about dementia, I combined the concept of the past and present within a laser cut house-shaped box. I transformed a moment of the animation into a physical flipbook version: a memory of the past became an animated photograph. Combined with the collection of sensory elements on the outside of the box, these elements aim to display the importance of stimulating dementia patients in the present through tactile play.
‘Hydrangea’ Necklace Pendant
2020
Personal Project
Inspired by the metalworking technique of Mokume-gane, and as an endeavour in jewellery design, this pendant aims to encapture nature, considering the assemblance, functionality and style.
‘Fragmented’ Puzzle
2023
Personal Project
I designed this laser cut puzzle while exploring the subject of dementia.
The fragmented image represents the idea of memory loss and the experience of trying to solve an ‘unsolvable’, distorted image whilst finding acceptance and beauty in what it is. There are two game options - a sliding game and a matching game - where you use the pieces to try to recreate the original image.
Laser Cut Toys and Accessories
2022
Event: LCC Illustration and Visual Media Winter Art Fair
I designed a collection of toys and accessories, including ‘jumping star’ toys, a ‘day of the week’ desk wheel, keychains and earrings of four animal characters.
From sketches to digitally formatted and machine laser cut, back to individually assembling each item by hand, they were thoughtful and homely gifts as Christmas presents at the Winter Art Fair.
‘Sprites’
2021
Client: Not Just A Shop
I designed minimalist character designs applicable to various product ranges, including: stickers, magnets, cards, prints and digital artwork etc.
Expressing shared everyday experiences and small but sensitive gestures of kindness, these illustrations are intended to be products that bring warmth to shared living spaces.
‘Pippa Between Pages’
2021
Personal Project
I designed a fictional story for a children’s book, with a focus on developing a foldable activity board that attaches to the inner back cover.
The story is reflected in the tactile mechanisms on the board, for sensory and experiential learning and play. I considered the user experience, by assembling the board for the user to read the story and interact with the board simultaneously, for role play potential.
